Finn Juhl

The pioneer of Scandinavian design and the father of the „Danish Modern” concept, architect Finn Juhl was one of the greatest self-taught furniture designers in the world. He designed by measuring his own body and analysing how the individual components of the chair should carry the human body. But contrary to his modernist contemporaries, with their streamlined, scaffolding-like structures, Juhl aimed at a more organic, natural form. His ambition was to design furniture with movement and life. Thus, Juhl had the mind-set of a sculptor, when he shaped a piece of furniture and translated his ideas into daring, supple joinery where each element of the design flowed seamlessly into each other.
“Art has always been my main source of inspiration. I am fascinated by shapes which defy gravity and create visual lightness.” – Juhl said. His famous Pelican Chair, Poet Sofa, Chieftain Chair and 45 Chair have become darlings of the Danish Modern movement today. FINN JUHL company manufactures re-launched architects’ furniture since 2001. The collection takes its starting point both in the original drawings as well as the older original pieces from Juhl house, private collections or museums –  40 classic design masterpieces.
